Perfectly Simple Porridge

Porridge is definitely one of our favourite breakfasts, partly because it’s good for us and keeps us full but also because so much can be added to it to make it even more exciting! Sometimes it takes the place of lunch or even dinner. Who made up the food rules anyway!

The basics – for one person

  • Oats – 30 to 40 grams (that’s about 3 – 4 tablespoons)
  • Water or milk of any type – about a cup full but can always add more if it seems stodgy

Heat up gently. Keep stirring and it’s ready when it’s the consistency that you like. It usually takes about 5 – 10 minutes, depending on the type of oats.

Getting creative!
It’s fine just like that of course, but you might like to get creative and add in lots of lovely flavours and of course extra nutrients! So, here are some ideas of things that you can stir into your porridge while it’s cooking, or add on when you serve it up. Some you’ll love,
some you won’t, so just try out things and see what works for you.

  • Cinnamon and turmeric are regular additions for us, about 1⁄2 teaspoon of each. Plus a tiny bit of black pepper as that makes the turmeric work better!
  • Nutmeg – a tiny scraping seems to be enough
  • Grated lemon skin
  • Grated ginger or ginger powder – we like a lot!
  • Any fresh or frozen berries – perhaps add a handful of blueberries from the freezer
  • Stewed apple or rhubarb – making ice cubes of frozen fruit and adding them to the porridge can save time
  • Peanut butter, or any nut butter. About a teaspoon will do it. Sounds weird? We thought so too until we tried it!
  • Chocolate – one square of very dark chocolate is so good, honest!
  • A dollop of live yoghurt or kefir on the top can really finish things of very nicely

Enjoy!
